nick and the candlestick.

Let the stars
Plummet to their dark address,

Let the mercuric
Atoms that cripple drip
Into the terrible well,

You are the one
Solid the spaces lean on, envious.

Sylvia Plath.

sonicfest 2005!

In the secret, in the quiet place
In the stillness, You are there
In the secret, in the quiet hour I wait
Only for You
Cause I want to know You more

sonicfest 2005 was wonderful. despite how deafened i have become from standing under the speakers the whole night, i had a great time bouncing and singing with mari and jac. and gasp, sonicflood... now sonicflood was just amazing! i'm soooo happy they played my favourite songs! met up with kwanie and dennis too!

i can feel in my bones (and in my heart) that the rest of the weekend is going to be fabulous. :)

high on life!

Live neither in the past nor in the future, but let each day absorb all your interest, energy and enthusiasm. The best preparation for tomorrow is to live today superbly well.

Sir William Osler, Father of Modern Medicine.

i'm happy and contented. thank you so much for everything.

and she answers, "everyday."

Monday, July 25, 2005

future tense.

perhaps i should look for a nice, meaningful jack kerouac quote that describes what i'm feeling, so i don't have to attempt to articulate myself at all. (badly, too!)

Here I stand, six feet small
And smiling cause I'm scared as hell
Kind of like my life is like a sequel to a movie
Where the actors' names have changed

And these days, I wish I was six again
O make me a red cape, I wanna be Superman

that was john mayer, however.

tomorrow, i will sign away eleven years of my life. that, and sonicfest on friday with mari!

today was good. things are looking up, and what awaits is worth being excited about. :)

Sunday, July 24, 2005

I like too many things and get all confused and hung-up running from one falling star to another till i drop. This is the night, what it does to you. I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.

Jack Kerouac, from On the Road.

coda.

What is the feeling when you're driving away from people, and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? —it's the too huge world vaulting us, and it's good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.

Jack Kerouac, from On the Road.

and i know that feeling so well. the soft dive into oblivion, the leaving behind of all that is familiar to pursue something new. nouveau. monday will be interesting.

the past eight months held many firsts for me. my first job, my first time clubbing, my first third-language lessons, my first time watching a man die, my first overseas trip without a parent or teacher escort, my first time in europe. i suppose i could think of more if given the time. yet it is odd that when i try to put what i've learnt into words, it is not something tangible like i learnt to drive (which i haven't unfortunately), but more of how my personal world view has expanded. i would like to say that i've grown as a person, and perhaps i have. every moment has been a time of learning, and as i soon leave my adolescence behind these are the memories that will remain special and beautiful.

on a lighter note, mustafa made for a great shopping experience today. now i don't know why there's this misconception that mustafa sells only electronics. the place has everything from toiletries to cars! yes, real automobiles! but what mom and i really enjoyed looking at was the funky indian jewellery. i love all things red, purple and gold! :)

your favourite fruit is chocolate-covered cherries.

You're the only one who
Holds my hair back when I'm drunk and get sick
You're the only one who
Knows exactly what I mean

You're the only one who
Drags me kicking and screaming through fast dreams
You're the only one who
Knows exactly what I mean

going swiss with the bums and the pods.

wilkommen! here's the very comprehensive photolog as promised. it's probably going to slow your browser down, you have been forewarned. well then, enjoy!

day 1 : singapore to doha to zurich.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

"coffee beanery" at the doha airport (qatar).

day 2 : landed safely in zurich, gaining six hours in the process.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

a gorgeous view of zurich from the lookout point.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

you and me sunday driving, not arriving. photo taken from inside the coach.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

around lake zurich and its sweet little parks.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

walking along winding cobblestone paths through the old town.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

very very pretty (and expensive) shops. it's alexander mcqueen!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

in the old town.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

an artist ponders the view.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

on a lazy sunday morning, everyone sleeps in.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

teddy bears of all kinds were apparently this year's summer decoration. they were planted all over zurich. very cute!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the word "singapore" on his nose...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

... just had to be significant!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

ooh, too hot to handle!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

pods and i deciding to do some exploring of our own before checking in. here we are in some housing estate, haha.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we climbed into a completely empty stadium!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

it's fun taking stupid photos...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

gosh! mini centre just outside our hotel. there were minis of every colour imaginable. how absolutely beautiful.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

me and my dream mini!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

after checking in and getting some shut-eye, we took tram 2 to the central zurich train station.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

us getting excited over this fototeddy machine, which was this teddy bear that would take your photo if you followed the hand movements on the screen. to see our photo, go here, type the number '8289' and press search.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the other side of the train station, and us.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

continued exploring led us to more teddies! yay, it's us and paddington!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the smart car! only seats two, but very cute.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

all the shops were closed because it was sunday... but here's a familiar brand.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

ooooh. FERRIS WHEEL. naturally, we couldn't resist ourselves.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

a very nice photo of pods! the view was amazing.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and don't i just love being blue? :)

day 3 : zurich to bern, then on to interlaken.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

it's us at rosen garten (rose garden) in bern!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

erm, bern kind of looks just like zurich.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

would you think?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we placed the camera on self-timer for all these photos!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

some a bit crazy.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and some just pretty.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

my love is like a red, red rose.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the river which swiss people jump into the summer. we didn't see anyone jumping though, pity.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

left alone to our own devices in the afternoon, pods and i decided to visit einstein's apartment in bern, where he developed the theory of relativity!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

pods and her spiral staircases.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

on to interlaken! it started to get cold...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

so we huddled up!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and it was very windy, which explains why i look like a pufferfish here.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the wind was fun though. we locked arms and twirled around on the grass until we collapsed in laughter.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

oooh. cute ducks!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

i got a pretty good close-up!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

when eventide fell in interlaken, the wind chilled us to the bone. here i am after our dinner at the interlaken casino! very nice restaurant.

day 4 : montreux, lausanne and geneva.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

in the morning at the chillon castle in montreux. i wanted to go to the jazz festival badly. but our tour just didn't allow time for that. :(

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

how the rich and opulent used to live centuries ago.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

didn't take too many photos inside, it was kind of dark.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the long corridor, with holes in the wall for the soldiers to shoot people on the outside.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

pods runs her fingers through the fountain of life, or just another fountain.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

yeah! thirsty me.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

where the earth meets the sky.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and where the bummmms holds up the mountain. hee.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

lausanne, where the IOC headquarters resided, was just a short drive away. everyone was in singapore of course.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the glorious view.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we figured "petit ouchy" must mean a short, sharp pain, like a pin prick.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

just us and our feet.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

on to geneva... fabled, beautiful geneva, land of the UN. there were stupid roadworks going on outside the UN so we couldn't get good photos. pods has some photos of buildings like UNESCO and WHO, i think.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

thus, we shall contend ourselves with simple grassy lands outside one of the universities.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and more photos of the old town! another pretty cafe.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

yum.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

i was apparently standing on century-old wood that had hardened. didn't feel like it!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we loved the store displays!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we visited a lovely cathedral.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

with stunning stained-glass windows.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

quintessential geneva. with jet d'eau, the symbol of geneva.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

back to interlaken for the night. we had dinner at bebbi's, this adorable restaurant with a very rambunctious boss (bebbi of course). the rosti was fabulous!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

three kinds of fondue! cheese, oil and chocolate. i liked the second most. decadence out in the cold!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

woohoo! here's pearline demonstrating how you blow into an alpine horn.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

bebbi gave pods a swiss flag, haha. here we are with him and our tour group mates.

day 5 : the highlight of our trip, zermatt!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

waiting for the bus to get onto the train. yes, our entire bus was actually transported on a train with ourselves inside to zermatt. quite an experience!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

on the train to from tasch to zermatt, the base of the matterhorn.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

a swiss student. this was completely unintentional, really. haha.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the matterhorn was a sight to behold.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

mr shaggy fur was just sitting by the roadside, watching the world go by.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

irresistable!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

at the cable car centre. quite a disconcerting notice.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the first cable car stop. with some pretty alpine mountain in the background.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

in swizzieland, dogs can go anywhere. cable cars, public transport, ferris wheels and even the airport. this gorgeous golden retriever was in the same cable car as us!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

he loved the snow! at klein matterhorn (4000m.)

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

before pods and i got snowed in, we managed to take some photos looking like eskimos.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

having our token cup of hot schokolade before we went out to brave the snowstorm.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we made it to the ice palace alive!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the cool shot. impossible to be uncool at subzero temperatures anyway.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

braving the wind and cold, we took photos with a spade and a chisel we found.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

by the time we decided to take the cable car down, the visibility had dropped to about 5 metres? i had to inch close to the edge to take this photo.

day 6 : interlaken to schaffhausen, then to titisee, germany.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we were rather sad to leave interlaken. the view from our hotel was nothing short of amazing. the jungfraujoch in all her majesty!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and cute hotels with cute names all around. hotel krebs, anyone?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

on to schaffhausen, where we visited rhinefalls, europe's biggest waterfall (or something to that effect.)

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

this kind swiss man let us take photos with his dog!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

i was concentrating on taking a good photo of the dog on the boat, until i caught sight of the guy. :)

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

pods and i, cold but happy to be here!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

our coach driver stopped at a sunflower field so we could erm, fulfil our dreams of standing amidst a sea of sunflowers. pity the sunflowers were facing the other direction and there was no way any of us could walk to the other side in the mud.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

it was still very pretty, anyway. :)

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we crossed the swiss-german border into deutschland, birthplace of albert einstein and birkenstocks.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

little town of titisee.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

i adored this "everything-christmas" shop! felt like a child in a giant toy store.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

lunch was a huge PORK KNUCKLE. didn't really enjoy this meal since i spent more time trying to get at the meat than actually eating it. plus it cost me 20 euros!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

a pretty photo with hot schokolade, again.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

le chalet de la forêt noir., the chalet of the black forest. our pretty hotel was nestled cosily in the black forest.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we decided to try german beer! it was very light.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

our driver was very funky, and he knew all these amazing card tricks.

day 7 : back to switzerland! on we go to lucerne.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

with the lion monument, a rather touristy spot.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

getting married in lucerne's old town. a grumpy asian bride who must have been very cold.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

awww. here for the wedding.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the important shot of lucerne. the lucerne bridge.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

on the bridge!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

another lovely shot.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

swiss people like to jump off bridges. naked too!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

sitting along lake lucerne was very refreshing.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the view was great too.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we had dinner here, on bahnofstrausse. this place has the most amazing pasta.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

trust me, i feel hungry just thinking about it.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

around town after dinner. yes, absinthe makes the heart grow fonder...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

ack. the beautiful store displays. this one is united colours of benetton.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

we bid farewell to our driver here in lucerne.

day 8 : mount pilatus.

given one free day in lucerne, pods and i decided to do the "golden roundtrip" ourselves, which set us back by 79.80 francs a head. we would start by steamer along lake lucerne from lucerne to alpnachstad, then continue up to the peak of mount pilatus (2132m) by cogwheel railway. from the peak, we would take a cable car down to the halfway point and hike the rest of the way down.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

whee, off we go!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

swirls of light!

at alpnachstad, we got onto the world's steepest cogwheel railway (48 % inclination or something.)

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

whee!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the resonant chiming of cowbells filled the air. very nice.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

charming views from the cogwheel railway.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

finally at the peak, a dizzying height of 2132m!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

on a clear day, i can see forever.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

left our two cents' worth at the peak.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

oooh i see mist coming.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and it comes.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

until the visibility dropped to less than 10 metres.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

hey but taking photos in the mist is fun!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and of course, performances at 2132m are always enjoyable, even when you're cold.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

soon, we started our erm, descent. we took the cute red cable car to the halfway point. (frankmunstegg, about 1000m.)

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

some hikers.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

before we started our hike, we stopped for yummy lindt chocs at a playground. and hot schokolade from the cafe of course.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

on to kriensegg, by foot!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

the blooming flowers looked so exotic!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

walking through the forest was fun though we were slightly afraid of getting lost. we were soon glad to see a paved road...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

with bathtubs for the cows' drinking water?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

yay! we finally reached kriensegg, the base of pilatus! took a bus back to lucerne.

my last night in switzerland. i wanted to capture every sight, every sound, every feeling.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

sigh, i want to go wherever it's going.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

hot dog on public transport! in the bus.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

gloriously gothic!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

lake lucerne again.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

with 'SNG' brand boats.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

a gorgeous cathedral, with a very peaceful and beautiful graveyard.

day 9 & 10 : lucerne to zurich to doha to singapore. (stupid long flight that cheated us of two days.)

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

tolberone gold bars at the zurich airport duty-free.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

our parting shot at the zurich international airport. saying goodbye was painful! but it was time to go home and get back to reality.

(with photos from miss pearline yum, of course.)
