hayao miyazaki's magic.

these are the films i've been waiting for. and i should have discovered them earlier... over the past week, i have fallen rather in love with hayao miyazaki's howl's moving castle.

the moving castle!

this film is beautiful. every scene seems carefully contemplated and the end result is something truly enchanting and out-of-wordly. it reminded me of the the fantastic journeys the main characters took in some of my favourite childhood films, like the neverending story or labyrinth. at the heart of the story was always... finding yourself. in howl's moving castle, after being turned into an old lady, the character sophie embarks on an adventure to retrieve her previous appearance. along the way, she finds friendship, loyalty, personal courage and love.

and spirited away is a real feast for the senses. i was enthralled from start to finish by the gorgeous frames and the weird and wonderful story. ghosts, porcine human beings, a wicked witch, an arachnoid man, a beautiful boy-dragon, a hamster baby, black furry spiders, paper birds, green goblin heads...

and kind demons with no face... simply magic, again.

strange, i was just thinking the other day how they don't make fantasy films the same way anymore.

slouchy shoes.

found on the clark shoes website... doesn't the the soft, creamy, slouchy leather call out to you? it isn't the most fashionable pair of shoes, but imagine how kind these will be to your feet after a long day at the hospital... or while running about in the middle of the night on call. they look like promising shoes indeed.
plus, they're gray! my new weakness. now i hope clark brings these to singapore.

hello, welcome to where i live (part III).

this fortress home of stone, found while surfing imagine sipping a warm mug of coffee on the terrace, watching the waves crash in the aegean sea... that feeling should be amazing +++. on the greek island of serifos.
I bought a ticket to the end of the rainbow
Watched the stars crash in the sea
If I can ask God just one question
Why aren’t you here with me tonight?

i was tired of lying.

brick - ben folds five... a classic.

Can't you see, it's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone than she ever has before

i'm really tired. the holidays are already starting to be not what they seem. sometimes, i think i create my own negativity...

thoughts on paediatrics.

i will say that i enjoyed paeds very much. i also understand now why friends who had taken the posting previously were so stressed over it. paeds is medicine +++. the knowledge involved is rather formidable... knowing how to id and correct fluid, electrolyte and metabolic disorders; going through how to treat simple paediatric conditions eg GE, pneumonia; learning about the multiple complications of cerebral palsy, spina bifida, thalassaemia; describing odd skin lesions (heliotropic rash, gottron's papules of dermatomyositis?)...
perhaps the most valuable learning point was seeing medicine more as a big picture than i have before. this was something i had not done enough in previous postings... being too focused on the patient's problems rather than the patient as a whole.

it was all good. and we were lucky for some amazing tutors at both NUH and KKH. initial apprehension about leaving NUH? rather unfounded. :)

paeds test today... liver nodules with bleeding varices, altered mental state requiring ICU admission... thereafter developing ?encephalopathy and neurogenic bladder. diagnosis was... wilson's disease! i did not get the diagnosis. i probably didn't ask enough relevant history, but i would not have known anyway. ah well.
note to self. things to LEARN PROPERLY SINCE I HAVEN'T before MBBS: disorders of sex, puberty, congenital heart disease, headache disorders, nocturnal enuresis, childhood cancers, failure to thrive... hahaha. may i remember this blog post when the time comes.
but... YAY! A BREAK AFTER FOUR MONTHS. finally! i am filled with a simple joy.

and you're still alright...

Living in a dream, walking in between the sunrise and sunset
the weepies' living in twilight. so melancholy and beautiful.

exams are almost here, shall post thoughts on posting later! back to poisons...

you're shaking my confidence...

a song my parents love! the rocking cecilia by simon and garfunkel. a happy ending, with jubilation, she loves me again!

needs more time +++ to revise! highly recommend the baby bear book from KKH. it doesn't have everything, but you don't want something too heavy as a carry-along guidebook either. really like the mini-ness of it! shoulda got it earlier.

heartland steals.

a simple, comfy afternoon in AMK with marky and zj. not very good japponese lunch!

followed by heartlands shopping. i found a yellow box for paeds! marky found retro tortoiseshell specs and zj found a backrest for his car.

back to school tomorrow. selamat hari raya to everyone.
